Altars and Agendas

African Spirituality vs Christianity: Can We Serve Two Masters?

Can you fully embrace your African identity—especially as a Yoruba person—without compromising your Christian faith?

It’s a question I’ve wrestled with for years. And lately, I’ve noticed more and more people turning back to African spirituality, reconnecting with their ancestors, and questioning the version of Christianity we inherited through colonization.

But for those of us who still believe in Jesus, it’s not so simple.

As a Yoruba woman, I know firsthand how deeply spiritual our culture is. The language, the greetings, the rituals—none of it is neutral. Yoruba culture doesn’t separate faith from daily life. So when people say, “Just keep the culture and leave the religion,” I wonder: Can we really do that?

In this episode of Altars and Agendas, I explore this tension head-on:

  • What is the difference between culture and religion in African tradition?
  • Is Christianity inherently colonial—or is there a way to decolonize our faith?
  • What do we lose or gain when we try to serve two spiritual lineages?

If you’ve ever felt torn between your roots and your religion, this conversation is for you.
